Do I have to use REC TEC brand pellets?

You do not have to use REC TEC brand wood pellets. However, low quality pellets may create excessive ash in your fire pot, impact your ability to reach high temperatures or impact your ability to hold low temperatures. You can always test a bag of pellets to see how they perform. They won't hurt your grill or void your warranty. You should always avoid pellets with real mesquite wood, the growing conditions of mesquite will cause the pellets to contain an unacceptable amount of sand.

Can the REC TEC Grill burn wood chips?

No, your grill needs wood pellets to operate properly.

Do you have a second shelf option?

Yes, we have a second shelf option that can be purchased in the accessory section of the website.

What are the grill mats and how do they work?

Grill mats are a fiberglass mesh with a non stick coating which have been approved by the FDA for use with food. They work best for foods that are delicate like fish, or have many small pieces like shrimp, vegetables, or potatoes. the mats make it easy to quickly get your food on and off your grill. They also help in removing fish from the grill without breaking it apart.

What is the searing kit and how does it work?

Our searing kit is made by GrillGrates. GrillGrates act like a lens on top of any heat source. They magnify and focus the grill's heat, converting it to infrared heat. They are made from hard anodized aluminum, which conducts heat more efficiently than cast iron or stainless steel. The searing kit should always be used on the right side of the grill. If they are used on the left side, the searing kit will block airflow to the grill's temperature probe and your grill will report a temperature that is not accurate.

RT-680 Assembly

Where are my small bolts for installing the bull horn handles?

The small bolts are screwed into the base of the bull horn handles.

Is there a right way to install bull horns?

We install them pointing inward and upward. However, you can install them in any direction you like. It's an opportunity to show off your personal style.

Where are the white braided RTD wires that need to be attach to the controller located?

Inside the grill body on the left. Simply remove the black sheath from the white wires, feed them through the hole in the grill body directly below the RTD, then through the hole in the side shelf, and plug them into the tabs marked "RTDA".

Should I cover the RTD wire with the black sheath provided?

You should remove and discard the black sheath. Leaving the black sheath covering the RTD wires could cause moisture to accumulate inside the sheath. Wet RTD wires that are touching each other may cause your grill to display incorrect temperature information.

Does it matter which wire goes on each of the "RTDA" tabs?

The order does not matter as long as both wires are connected to the two tabs mark as RTDA.

Should I remove the metal bracket holding the RTD?

No this bracket will keep the distance between the RTD and the side of the grill stable and prevent RTD movement during grate removal and installation. Ideally the tip of your RTD should be 1/2" from the sidewall of your grill.

Can the grill be left outside?

Yes, the grill can be left outside. However, we do recommend keeping it covered when it is not in use.

How long should my burn in be and at what temperature?

400 degrees for 1 hour. If you line your drip pan with foil before you start, your grill will be preheated and ready for cooking when your hour is finished.

How high should my smokestack cap be above my smokestack?

You should be able to see across the top of your stack through to the other side. Lowering the cap will restrict air flow and hinder the performance of your grill.

RT-680 Use

Do REC TEC Grills require electricity?

Yes, it is recommended that your REC TEC Grill be plugged into a GFCI outlet.

Can I use an extension cord with my REC TEC Grill?

Yes, it is recommended that you keep the end of the extension cord protected from the weather (i.e. elevated so it will not be in standing water).

How much electricity do REC TEC Grills require?

Your REC TEC Grill will require approximately 350 watts during the first 5 minutes of operation, while it is lighting the pellets. Once the REC TEC is lit, it uses less that 100 watts of electricity.

Can a REC TEC Grill be powered by a generator or inverter?

Yes, It is recommended that you provide at least 500 watts of power.

How far does A REC TEC Grill need to be from a house, railing or other structure?

Your REC TEC Grill should be a minimum of 24" from any combustible surface.

Does the lid of the REC TEC need to be open during start up?

No, your REC TEC Grill will light itself with the lid closed.

Can I cook with the lid of my REC TEC open?

No, your REC TEC will lose too much heat and will not cook effectively. Actually, it is best to limit the number of times you look at your food and the length of time you spend with the lid open. This will help your grill maintain a stable temperature and you will be more likely to repeat your results.

Will the temperature of my REC TEC drop every time I open the lid?

Yes, but don't worry your grill will start adding more pellets to compensate for the lost heat. Best practices are to limit the number of times you open the lid and the length of time you leave the lid open. The longer the lid is open the longer it takes your grill to stabilize on your selected temperature after you close the lid.

Do I need a water pan like my traditional smoker?

No, your REC TEC Grill uses wood pellets with enough moisture content to prevent your food from drying out. Additionally, water pans will create steam inside your cooking chamber and limit your grill's ability to measure temperature accurately.

Will I have to put a handful of pellets in the fire pot every time during start up?

No, your REC TEC is designed to minimize your efforts to create fire and maintain temperature. Simply pour pellets in the hopper, turn on your REC TEC, select a temperature, and let the REC TEC do the work. In fact, any attempts to "help" your REC TEC will result in it taking longer to achieve your desired result. For example if you have been running your grill at 300 degrees, then turn the temperature down to 225, and open the lid to help reduce the temperature faster, your REC TEC will start adding extra fuel to counteract the rapid drop in temperature. The REC TEC will do this to prevent overshooting the 225 temperature you selected. Once you close the lid, the temperature will start climbing and the grill will not stabilize until you stop "helping". Let the grill do the work, relax and enjoy the REC TEC lifestyle.

How long does it take an RT-680 to heat up?

Of course this depends on the weather conditions and the temperature selected. From lighting through temperatures up to 350F it should take 20-30 minutes and maximum temperatures will take 30-45 minutes. On cold or windy days preheat time may be increased by 10-15 minutes.

What is the temperature range of the RT-680?

The temperature range is 180F-500F. However, the available "full" mode will run your grill at full auger capacity and can reach temperatures in excess of 500F (this will be limited by pellet fuel selection and weather conditions).

What does the "full" feature do?

After your temperature selection reaches 500F you can push the up arrow one more time to enter "full" mode. When in "full" mode your grill will run at full auger capacity and can reach temperatures in excess of 500F (this will be limited by pellet fuel selection and weather conditions).

What does the "Xtreme smoke" feature do?

The "xtreme Smoke" feature will cause your fan to slow/stop intermittently. This slowing of the fan will cause your pellets to smolder more and create additional smoke. This feature can only be used when cooking between 180F and 250F. If the grill needs 100% air flow to burn the pellets required to reach the temperature you selected due to cold weather, your fan may not slow even though the "Xtreme Smoke" feature is engaged.

Why does the blower fan of my RT-680 cycle off and on?

Your blower fan is cycling on and off because your grill is in "Xtreme Smoke" mode. To exit/disengage "Xtreme Smoke" mode press the "Xtreme Smoke" button once, the LED light will turn off and your blower fan will run constantly.

RT-680 Troubleshooting

Why does my grill trip my GFCI?

Often times this can signal the beginning of an ignitor rod failure. However, other factors can cause a GFCI to trip. For example a wet extension cord, having a refrigerator, freezer, battery charger or other high drawing electrical device on the same circuit may cause a GFCI to trip. If your GFCI trips, it is a good idea to see if other items have also powered down. If not, you can replace the ignitor with the spare that was shipped with your grill.

Why won't my grill controller turn on but my interior light still works?

Because the fuse on the back of your controller has blown. Unplug your grill, remove the access panel on the bottom of your side shelf and remove the glass fuse. If your fuse is blown, you should unplug your ignitor rod before replacing the fuse (250VAC 5amp). Once the fuse is replaced and your grill will turn on, replace the ignitor rod. If you do not have time to replace the ignitor, you can light your grill manually.

Why won't my grill turn on?

First make sure you have power to your grill. If you have power to your interior light, your fuse is blown (see answer above). If your interior light will not come on, you do not have power to your grill. In this case check your GFCI, circuit breaker, extension cord, and outlet for issues.

Why is my grill reading 32F when I know it is hotter than 32F?

Because your temperature probe (RTD) wires have become wet. Remove the black sheath (if applicable) from the RTD probe wires between your grill and side shelf and separate the two white wires.

Why won't my grill get to 500F anymore?

Most of the time this is caused by low quality pellets or pellets that have been subjected to moisture. Low quality pellets and moisture contaminated pellets are not as tightly compressed as high quality pellets. This causes them to burn more like paper, producing less heat and less smoke. If you see condensation on the inside of your pellet hopper lid, this is an indication of inadequate airflow. Make sure your fire pot is clean and check for obstructions between your blower fan and the fire pot. Using mesquite pellets will cause excessive ash and restricted airflow.

Why does my grill no longer have visible smoke?

Usually changes in a grill's behavior are caused by a change in fuel brand or contamination of pellets by moisture. Low quality pellets and moisture contaminated pellets are not as tightly compressed as high quality pellets. This causes them to burn more like paper, producing less heat and less smoke.

My grill is showing an ER-1 code?

This code is for an overheat condition and usually will only occur if you have a grease fire in your grill. However, if you just assembled your grill you may have the RTD wire on the wrong tabs. The RTD wires should be connected to the tabs marked "RTDA".

My grill won't light or is showing an ER-2 code?

This means your grill did not reach a temperature of 175F within 30 minutes. Look at your fire pot. If you see pellets that have not been burned, your ignitor rod has failed and should be replaced. If you do not have time to change the ignitor, manually light your grill and change it later. If you do not see pellets in your fire pot, turn your grill on and look for the auger to turn (it turns very slowly and only for the first 30 seconds that your grill is on). If the auger turns but does not deliver pellets, you have an obstruction in your pellet hopper. Unplug your grill remove the pellets from your hopper and clear the obstruction. If your auger does not turn, call us at 855-696-0890.

My grill is showing an ER-3 code?

This is a power failure code. Check your outlet, extension cord, etc. to insure you have good connections.

What kind of lightbulb does the grill use?

The REC TEC uses a 120V, 50W halogen bulb with a GY6.35 base. This bulb is available in most hardware stores.

New REC TEC Users

What is the number one rule for new users?

Trust your grill!!! Opening your grill to check your food will slow the cooking process. Just slow down and relax. It is very difficult to overcook your food on a REC TEC and most foods can be cooked without being turning. Remember: "If you're looking, you're not cooking."

Maintaining Your REC TEC Grill

How often should I clean the exterior of my grill?

Whenever you spill sauces, marinades, or grease on your grill it should be removed. Marinades and sauces usually contain acidity which can cause issues with your powder coating if not removed.

How should I clean the exterior of my grill?

Mild soap and water should be sufficient to remove most accumulation from your grill.

How often should I change the foil on my drip pan?

Lining the drip tray with aluminum foil will make clean up a breeze. Just be sure your foil is flat so grease does not pool. Change the foil after cooking greasy foods at low temperature. The accumulated grease on your foil increases the risk of a grease fire and will impact the flavor of your food.

How often should I clean my fire pot?

Remove any large crusty ash from the fire pot every time you change your foil. Using a shop vac is not necessary.

How often should I clean the interior of my grill?

Grease, that accumulates on the barrel of the grill is "seasoning" and should not be removed. Ash in the barrel should be removed in the spring (it works as insulation during the winter months). It's also a good idea to check your smoke stack for accumulation that may obstruct airflow from the grill every 6 months.

Should I clean the RTD (temperature probe) of my grill?

No, the RTD does not require any regular cleaning. However, if you see any large accumulation on the RTD, simply wipe it off with a dry paper towel.

Are the REC TEC grates dishwasher safe?

The REC TEC grates are dishwasher safe. However, the searing kit is not dishwasher safe.

How should I clean the Lens of my RT-680's light?

The light lens simply pops out and can be cleaned with oven cleaner or put in the dishwasher.

What kind of lightbulb does the RT-680 use?

The REC TEC uses a 120V, 50W halogen bulb with a GY6.35 base. This bulb is available in most hardware stores.

Pellets

How should I store my pellets?

Pellets should be stored in a cool dry place. Exposure to moisture will ruin your pellets.

How much fuel does the grill use per hour?

On warm days, the RT-680 uses about 1 pound of pellets per hour at low temperatures. Colder weather, large quantities of food, and higher temperatures will increase pellet consumption.

On warm days, the RT-300 uses about 1/2 pound of pellets per hour at low temperatures. Colder weather, large quantities of food, and higher temperatures will increase pellet consumption.

Can I use any pellet in my REC TEC?

You do not have to use REC TEC brand wood pellet. However, low quality pellets may create excessive ash in your fire pot, impact your ability to reach high temperatures, or impact your ability to hold low temperatures. You can always test a bag of pellets to see how they perform. They won't hurt your grill or void your warranty. You should always avoid pellets with real mesquite wood, the growing conditions of mesquite will cause the pellets to contain an unacceptable amount of sand.

Where can I purchase pellets for my REC TEC?

Here on our site we have great prices for bulk pellets and links to pellets for sale by the bag at great prices.

Can I leave pellets in my REC TEC when it is not in use?

Yes, you can leave pellets in your grill when not in use. Just make sure to cover your grill to prevent your pellets from getting wet. However, if your grill is going to be out of use for several weeks due to travel, it would be a good idea to remove the pellets.

How are wood pellets made?

High quality pellets are made from sawdust that has been dried to a specific moisture content. Once the sawdust has been dried, it is compressed using a die and a specific amount of pressure. The natural lignin in the wood will hold the pellet together until it is burned in your grill or gets wet. Low quality pellets are typically made using lower die pressures. This lower pressure causes the pellets to have a lower BTU per pellet and burn much faster than a high quality pellet. This will cause grills to lose fire at low temperatures and prevent a grill from reaching its maximum temperatures. Low quality pellets can still perform fine at temperatures from 250F to 400F.

Can my choice of pellet effect the performance of my REC TEC?

Yes, low quality pellets may create excessive ash in your fire pot, impact your ability to reach high temperatures, or impact your ability to hold low temperatures. You can always test a bag of pellets to see how they perform. They won't hurt your grill or void your warranty. You should always avoid pellets with real mesquite wood, the growing conditions of mesquite will cause the pellets to contain an unacceptable amount of sand.
